Addiction and the Opioid Epidemic

The opioid crisis has caused a great deal of pain for the people of Billerica and the Commonwealth. Most Billerica residents know at least one person either suffering from addiction or who has lost someone to the crisis. Victims of the opioid crisis do not need a criminal record and incarceration, they need access to proper care that is both effective and compassionate.

Every day, families share their stories of struggle, of both the mental health fallout as well as the financial hardships of dealing with a loved one's addiction. And in the worst cases, as we have seen too many times, they struggle with the grief of losing a loved one.

As your State Representative, I will support the use of medically and scientifically recommended safe injection sites and the continued use of clean needle exchanges. The evidence shows that these logical solutions reduce the number of overdose deaths as well as combat the spread HIV, which has been on the rise in our region. I will advocate for establishing more peer recovery centers and will fight to make recovery high schools more available and accessible to the students who need them and are seeking help.

Affordable Housing & Community Preservation

Our town has battled with Chapter 40B, the affordable housing law. Families in our town deserve to have access to affordable and high-quality housing that lets people remain living where they work or grew up. But our state is facing a housing crisis and that is making finding affordable housing more difficult for our working families.

We have met our quota in Billerica, but unless we encourage smart development - using tools provided by Mass. General Laws - our town will once again be battling Chapter 40B, rather than working with it. By creating multi-use overlay distracts and concentrating new development on underutilized, underdeveloped, or abandoned areas, we can put more emphasis on protecting our remaining natural open space, wetlands, and agricultural lands.

Now that our town has a Community Preservation Committee, many new opportunities for preserving our natural open space and our historic landmarks are becoming realized. As your State Representative, I will fight to ensure our Community Preservation Act trust fund sees an increase in revenue so that we may one day bring state to community reimbursement back above 50%.

Climate Change & the Environment

Climate change is reality, whether you want to believe it or not. Without the federal government defending our precious natural resources and our planet, it's up to us to make sure our Commonwealth takes the lead in combatting climate change.

Decisions about climate change and the environment that are being made today will affect all generations to come. We must focus on building a sustainable future that rewards green infrastructure, restores funding to the Community Preservation Act trust, and protects our public lands, river-ways, and watersheds.

Additionally, I stand with our State Senator, Cindy Friedman, in her pledge to support allocating 1% of our state budget to supporting our environmental agencies. As Sen. Friedman says, "investing one penny of every state-operating dollar to protect our environment is not too much to ask."

Electoral Reform & Improving Our Democracy

As American citizens, voting is not just one of our most fundamental civil rights, but it's our highest patriotic duty. Still, right here in Massachusetts, the birthplace of American democracy, becoming a registered voter and even casting a ballot are difficult for many voters. Turnout in our state primaries over the past two decades has plummeted by 30% and almost 700,000 people are eligible, but not registered to vote.

Now that Automatic Voter Registration has passed, more people will have an opportunity to stay up-to-date with their voter registration. But even with AVR, people may not have had an opportunity to be registered before Election Day. That's why I will encourage our Secretary of State to develop an efficient and secure way for citizens of Massachusetts to register to vote on Election Day and will sponsor appropriate same-day registration legislation.

Elected officials should truly represent all of us and that means being elected by an outright majority of voters. In reality, in Massachusetts and across the country, this is simply not the case. When there are three or more candidates in an election, the winner is usually the first past the post, even if they have only garnered 34% of the vote. Ranked Choice Voting is a best and most efficient solution to this problem. By encouraging candidates to reach out to as many voters as possible, RCV allowed the people to truly choose their representatives. Many democracies around the world, several American cities, and the State of Maine have all enacted RCV without difficulty and to great success.

Equality for Women

It's 2018. As your State Representative, I will fight tirelessly for equal opportunity for all women, closing the wage gap in our workplaces, and better paid parental leave to parents. We need to ensure that we maintain and increase funding towards reproductive health, including Planned Parenthood, which does incredible work for people in all areas of health care. One of the most important services PP provides are breast cancer scans and related tests and treatments - saving millions of lives each year.

I am proud to say that I am pro-choice, and as your State Representative, I will stand in solidarity with women and progressives everywhere against the SCOTUS if they come after Roe v. Wade. This attack on the right to choose will not stand with us, but we can only prevent it if we push back, get involved, and vote for proper representation.

Equality for LGBTQ+ People

As a friend and ally of the LGBTQ+ community, I will fight to improve legislation that protects our LGBTQ+ family, friends, and neighbors. That's why I hope that my fellow citizens of Billerica will join me voting Yes on Question 3 to preserve transgender civil rights protections. I am proud that House banned child conversion therapy in the summer of 2018, and I hope that together we can keep Massachusetts on this trend towards an evermore welcoming and solidified community.
